BEGGNING OF SOUTH INDIAN MOVIE INDUSTRY

  In 1912 the first Indian film, "Raja Harishchandra," was made in Bombay and in 1916 the first South Indian feature film, "Kechakvatham" (Destruction of Keechkan), was made in Madras. Both were based on stories from famous myths. The first studio in Madras, the India Film Company, was established in 1916. A grand exhibition was  organized in Madras  in 1909 to celebrate the visit of King George V. Its significant fascination was the screening of short movies with sound. A British company imported a Krone megaphone made from a film projector, with a gramophone attached to a disc containing a pre-recorded sound, and playing the two simultaneously, producing picture and sound simultaneously. Were. Were. Were. Were. Were. Were. Were. was doing. However, there was no synchronous dialogue. Raghupati Venkaiah Naidu, a successful photographer, took over the equipment after the exhibition and set up a tent cinema near the Madras High Court. R. Venkaiah, laden with funds, bu
